Shannondoah ( My West Virginia Mountain Home)

Purchased in September 2004, "Shannondoah" is my home away from home in the mountains of West Virginia. "Shannondoah" is located apprx. 3 hrs from the Washington, D.C. area and consists of a 11-acre, private natural preserve, a 1000 sq. foot log-sided cabin, and a one-of-a-kind view. It's a place to go to relax, to work, and to get away from the Rat Race of Washington, D.C. A special kind of therapy. Off the Grid. I will use this section on my website to share photos of the area and home with interested friends and family.

  • This photo was taken at sunrise during October 2004. It is the only time (during the past year) that I have seen the combination of the clouds in the valley and the early morning light so intense. I awoke from the loft to see the beautiful sunrise through the sky window.
  • One of the most spectacular sunsets so far at "Shannondoah." The swirls were filled with light AFTER the sun had gone behind the horizon--often the best time for a colorful sky. I had to stop sipping on my wine to get this one.
  • Over the 4th of July weekend, a black rat snake decided to devour four baby birds that were nesting on the upper rail of my deck. Instead of interfering with nature, I decided to grab my camera and let nature take its course.
  • Phil and Peter came out in May 2005 for a "Boy's Weekend Away." I'm very grateful to Phil (and Peter and Erika) for their hard work and assistance in helping me paint the interior of my cabin. We had a blast looking for frogs, taking hikes, drinking beers (and eating yogurt), and ...watching cartoons!
  • This wonderful light on the mountain ridges occurred for only a few short minutes over Memorial Day weekend, 2004. The cloud cover was perfect for the diffused, almost surreal, light.
  • I have not seen this rat snake (or any other snake) since July 4th weekend. It ventured into cabin land primarily to feast on the baby birds located on my deck. There is plenty of food for the snakes and other wildlife elsewhere in their habitat.
  • There were only a few snow storms during the early months of 2005. On this particular day, it was very cold outside, but the cabin was warm and cozy inside.
  • This photo was taken in October 2005 and is "posterized" in Adobe Photoshop.

  • Fultz Gap Road is the shortest way to Shannondoah via HWY 33. It's a classic WV mountain road with great views as it climbs up to apprx. 2500 feet.

  • The cabin grounds and Ole' Blue Jeep sprinkled with fluffy powder. Wonderful Winter Wonderland!
  • This photo is a montage of "Tree Faces" and the infamous "Shannondoah" sign during the late winter weeks of 2006.
  • An unexpected snowfall in March 2006 made for some beautiful scenery around the cabin.

  • This photo is named "Tornado Clouds" because the clouds closely resemble small funnels. This particular evening in early Spring 2006 made for some wonderful cloud formations. I'm always eager to sit on the deck in the late evening hours to see what type of fantastic sky the sun and clouds will serve up.
